Hi RV Forum friends!!
Whenever I have a tough question, I have come here and gotten excellent advice, so am hoping for some great advice once again. :-)
We are going to be traveling from South Dakota to Dallas, TX area at the end of November.
Any advice/suggestions on which southbound highway is the best?? It's either 81 or 83......
Thank you for any comments or suggestions or experience you can provide!!

If you are a member of Good Sam, you can fill out a form on your preferences, and they'll route you based on what you tell them.

Where is your starting point in SD? Do you prefer US or Interstate Hwys. A lot less stop on the IS. But the US are more scenic. You could have weather the end of Nov. I would head for the I70/I135 junction N of Salina, then to Big D. You can bypass the toll road south of Wichita on US 81 but you don't save much! Up from S TX to the Corn Palace,a few years ago then, west on I90 to Home in WA. Get a copy of MS Streets and Trips.

Hi from Silver Springs, FL. We're full timers out of Mitchell, SD (wife's family home area) and summer often finds us back in S. Dak. We've driven 81 all the way from central Texas straight N. to Yankton IN THE SPRING and think it's one of the best direct routes. We run a 45 MH towing Honda and except for a little construction once the whole drive was great.

Having said this, just know we haven't, and likely wouldn't, run that route in the winter unless ya have a good weather window.

So, where ya from in S. Dak.??

We traveled 81 from Yankton SD to Salinas KS then I35 to San Antonio good roads and no problems with 81. We're leaveing tomorrow for AZ and will be taking 81 again as far as Mcpherson KS then sw to Tucuncari NM and I40. Will report back if any problems on old US 81. On the road with our 2011 Siverado Duramax, 35 ft Hitchhicker, and 14ft V-nose taddem toy Trailer, last year was with a 2004 Chevy Duramax.

Well we are now in Liberal KS, traveled US 81 from Yankton SD to Mcpherson KS and found it still a very good route south, some resurfacing going on in KS but isn't slowing or bothering traffic. May be over with before you go through there. Have a good winter in TX, we're on our way to AZ desert country for some 4 wheeling and a warm sunny winter.
