Making our first trip to Mountain Stream and, having been on other roads in the GSM, wonder if there is any advice to be had on two possible routes? I will be travelling south on 81 and am thinking of taking 77 to 40/70 and west into Marion. I have never taken 77 or that part of 40 and was curious to know the conditions there?

My alternative route is one I have used and, although it takes me out of the way, it is pretty nice also. On that route I would take 81 to Johnson City, TN and then 181 to 19/23 into 240 around Ashville to then go 40/70 east to Marion?

I will be driving a 39 ft. Winnebago with a toad so I am concerned about towns & cities I may have to pass through.

Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Russ, having used all the mentioned routes, your first choice is most definately the best choice. Johnston city to Ashville is a very steep grade down hill, though beautiful, and the connections though Ashville are not nice and can be ugly if at the wrong time of day, then the 7mile down hill grade on 40 from Ashville to Marion is another break buster.
On 77 you have the down hill to 40 but then you are done. and the travel is easy.
Enjoy.

Colette and Joe, Thanks for the info. I will be taking the 77 route. I was in your neck of the woods last year in July and used the 81/181 route to get there so I am familiar with the downhill but, as you mentioned, it is a beautiful trip!

Spent some time in both Cashiers and Highlands as we were staying at Outdoor Resorts and just wanted to look around. You are in a beautiful spot also.

Thanks again,

Russ, we are on hwy 64 right in town on the way to highlands.
We have our property for sale so that we can retire. We need to get off the mountain, it is difficult to begin and end our trips with those 30 miles of white knuckle roads. We have been here for over 20 years so we can do them in a car with ease, but the MH is quite another issue.
Glad you enjoyed our area. We actualy stayed at Outdoor resort in Toxaway once, hosted a rally there. Everyone call it snob ville USA Outdoor had given most of us free week-ends so we took them up on it.
Enjoy your time in Marion.

Collette & Joe,

Answering from Mountain Stream now. The park is immaculate but the approach is tight! Having a great time and love having the river right behind. Sounds great all night!

Thanks again for the great steer, your recommendations were right on the money! 77 to 40 was no problem and parts were very scenic.

Safe miles,

I will be in that area around the 10th of August for a family reunion in Nebo. Was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Lake James Landing & Campground. I'd like to stay between Nebo and Morganton, but it looks like I may end up either closer to Marion or north of Morganton. If anyone knows of anything nice in the middle there that has some form of recreation for a 7 year old (swimming, playground, etc.), I'd love to hear about it so I can make my reservations. Thanks
