Another part of the problem is heavy traffic on a section of interstate that is still mostly only 2 lanes going each direction. In addition to this there is a section of I-10 with very heavy traffic in east Texas between Beaumont and the Houston metro area with lots of people that think everyone not doing 80 mph should be ran off the road.

We just returned from a trip from Baton Rouge east on I12 and I10 to Jacksonville. Traffic in Baton Rouge is terrible in the morning until around 9AM and from 3 to 6 PM. I did not find the road condition bad. We have a 38' motorhome on a Freightliner chassis. I remember making a comment to my wife about the road condition overall being good. I85 through South Carolina was not in good shape. I would not hesitate to drive I12 and I10 again. I don't think alternate routes would be as good. I have traveled I55 and I20 not any better than I12 and I10.
Sorry I read your post wrong. Been a couple years since I traveled west and it was not in good shape then.

I drove that stretch of highway 2 weeks ago from desert hot springs to LA in an american coach on a freightliner liberty chassis with no issue. It wasn't the smoothest stretch of road but it was no issue at all, it didn't rattle the coach apart or even rattle the dishes. I would do it again without concern.

You have a "heavy" with a tag. It will be fine.

If you do go through Baton Rouge make it worth while & stop at Tony's Seafood on Plank road. In addition to fresh seafood they also have prepared food (both seafood & non-seafood). Grew up in BR & when I do visit (rarely) my first stop is always there.

Just did I15. Bad yes, impassable no. Lots of traffic any time. Lot shorter than dropping down to New Orleans. No other way to go. 1000 miles out of way???

Thank you Fiesta48. I'm hoping you meant I-12?
