Helen Ga

Going to Unicoi State Park in September. Is there a way to get to Unicoi State Park with out driving thru Helen? I have heard the traffic can be rough going thru the town.
Driving 35 Class A towing

Any ideas?

thanks

That's only true on weekends and holidays, between 11am and 7pm

It's only about a mile from one end of town to the other, nothing like Atlanta. Like Dexters said the traffic is only slow on weekends.

September is early for the leaf watchers. Unless you are going to go at Labor Day, you should have no problem.

It's just slow'n'go for a mile or so and be careful to not mow down pedestrians who don't notice a 10-ton vehicle approaching.

Last rational food and fuel is Ingles in Cleveland. Last liquor is Discount Spirits in Helen; turn left at the windmill, and to get back out keep turning left and go past the fire station and turn left. The curbs are recessed so the fire trucks can get around.

If you need service Dalton Automotive southeast of Cleveland on GA 115 can take care of you.

I live 12 miles from Helen in Hiawassee. Here's the deal to avoid Helen if you are coming from the South to the state park. When leaving Cleveland toward Helen, a little out of town, keep looking to the left for a road called Asbestos Road. Take it to the end and you will intersect with Alt. 75. Right turn on Alt 75. Follow it to the end. Right turn. You will be about 500 yards or so from the left turn off to Unicoi State Park.

I have personally passed a 4.5 mile bumper to bumper single lane south of Helen. Traffic is a nightmare in season. Worse on weekends. The Tubing Buses clog the town and are generally given the right of way. Clueless people walk out in front of you.

We are arriving from the south on Saturday afternoon. I have read about the traffic issues especially on weekends.
We are going to take your advise and use this route. Looks good on google maps.
Thanks for the help

Last time we were there on a Sunday in July we were 3/4 mile out of town and it took an hour just to get to town. Stopped at the Hofbrauhaus for lunch. Left and went back the way we came (north) and the traffic was backed up for 3 miles....... and it was raining.
