Just traversed Hwy 17 from where Ont400 connects from the south. We came over from Kingston headed to Mackinac Mi; the hwy is mostly 2 lane, but has frequent and long passing lanes, aleternating sides between east/west lanes. Can be a bit rough and "washboarded" in sections, and we hit two sections that had been stripped prior to repaving, whihc were bare gravel for several miles!! We also encountered two sections of road construction that were down to one lane and stopped by flagmen, never waited more than 10-15 minutes before moving again.
We found that having no rest stops along the way a PITA, but most highways in Canada do not have them, only major highways have "On route", "plaza" like stops which are VERY noisy, dirty, and crowded with travellers. Always have a Tim Hortons if you need a doughnut sugar fix!!
Plan your trip over hwy 17 carefully, there are a FEW truckstops/cafes you can pull into and get a bite, take a break, etc., but beware, if you miss the turn it may be a day or so before you see another one that is open and you can get in to!!
We stopped at Serpent River campground for an overnight (nice little campground right on the Serpent River, max 30amp service) just to break the trip up, and I'm glad we did!! We took 3 days to travel 650 miles from Kingston to Mackinac, and again I'm glad we did...in a 45ft. motorhome the trip is quite doable but a bit more tiring than travelling the Interstates in the States!! Plan your trip, have an adventure, and go enjoy!!
