There are several historical sites as you travel along US 26
- Between Ogalalla and Lewellen you will drop down into Ash Hollow ... Windlass hill will be on your left (lots of cowboy boots on the fence posts near here) ... it is a short walk to the spot where the covered wagons were lowered by rope from teh mesa down into the valley
- Between Lisco and Broadwater there is a marker showing the route of the Mormon trail where the pioneer pushed handcarts as they moved from IL to UT
- Just beyond Bridgeport (slightly away from US 26) is Chimney Rock ... this was a distinctive landmark that is mentioned in many of the pioneers diaries as they moved across the great prairie
The large lake that you will get glimpses of as you travel between Ogalalla and Lewellen is formed by the Kingsley Dam across the North Platte river ... the level of the dam varies because it holds water for a gigantic irrigation project in mid and eastern Nebraska ...
As you travel between Bridgeport and Alliance you will be going through the Sandhills of Nebraska ... this is the home of the famous author Marie Sandoz
North of Alliance is Carhenge ... cadillacs positioned to mimic stonehenge
