Heading north in the AM. Currently setting in Charleston WV Casino on Rt #64. Anybody been up Rt#79N in WV and then Rt# 68 in Maryland to 81 in Hagerstown PA, compared to staying on 64 all the way over to Lexington Virginia then Rt 81 north???

Distance seems about the same, what's the difference in terrain and traffic???

I haven't done the I-64 leg but my son went to WVU for a semester so I did the I-79 to I-68 to I-70 to I-81 a few times.

I-79 Charleston to Morgantown is an easy route.

I-68 and I-70 has some ups and downs where you'll need to downshift so you don't burn your brakes. I-70 may be congested depending on time of day.

I-81 through VA is clear shot. If you decide to come up from Lexington, fill up in Winchester VA (Exit 323) before you get to more expensive fuel in WV, MD and PA.

I-79 North is basiclly good, few rough spots around Clarksburg.
I-68 East is another story. Really hilly. Personally, I will not run this road again.
I'd take your alternate route 64 t0 81.

I have been on 79N in West Virginia a few times and it is not a bad road.
68 across Maryland is a nice road, good views and wide. But it is hilly, long climbs and downgrades.
