Hwy 1 is a better route leaving the Golden Gate bridge than navigating the downtown SF hills and turns on Hwy 101. You will have no problems along the coast, even to Monterey, and the views are spectacular. After that you absolutely need to be back on Hwy 101.

You should stay at Wine Country RV Park in Paso Robles and take the toad over the coastal range to Piedras Blancas beach to check out the thousands of elephant seals. There are also several hundred vineyards and olive orchards in the area. Hearst Castle might be okay if you like that sort of thing. We prefer displays of nature over displays of wealth.
