I don't know how much time difference there is but if you're concerned about getting from point A to point B I'd take I5.... but 101 is our preferred route.

101 could take a month or more, you might find yourself getting stuck in all the many places to see along the way. For those without firm plans, north to south is the way to go. Plus pickup the Oregon Coast Travel guide, it highlights stops along the way.

Just a small point of geographic reference, US101 closest point to Seattle is about 75 miles. When in Washington State, it goes up the coast at the Astoria Bridge to Forks, and then loops around the Olympic Peninsula via Hoods Canal and terminates at I-5 Exit 104 between Olympia (Capitol) & Tumwater.
