Hwy 101 in OR

Currently in Florence, OR heading to Cannon Beach. Hwy 101 is the direct route but Garmin wants us to go 101 then to I-5 and back over to Cannon beach. That adds about 60 miles to the trip. Any thoughts on staying on 101 the entire way? Should have asked this last night as we're leaving today. DUH!

We went up the coast from Reedsport all the way to Ft Stevens - 101. We have our Garmin set to take secondary routes so we some times get surprising directions (when we already have chosen the Interstate) but 101 is just fine and beautiful!

Agree with JoAnn, stay on 101. It's a pretty drive and there is plenty to see.

We stayed at Winchester Bay in June, before heading north on 101. Great place, but I will not opt for the 'waterfront' site next visit, since the center sites are slightly raised and probably had better views

I'm from Oregon. Believe me when I say that 101 is a beautiful drive all the way to highway 1 stop at gold beach and take a jet boat ride up the rogue river. You won't be dissatisfied make sure to take the all day trip. It'll start chilly but gets very warm the farther you go up river. If you take I-5 stop in gold hill Oregon and ck out the house of vortex. One of 5 places in the world that has unanswered ?? Like the Bermuda triangle
Have fun
Ps lots of pull offs on 101 to take pics and let people pass. I-5 has steep grades !!!

The Oregon coast is a lovely drive. Unless the road is closed, I can't think of a good reason to go inland.

I checked Google maps, it suggested 101 as the best route. We've had our Garmin go wonky from time to time; a few weeks ago, it tried to send us 30 miles and an hour out of our way to avoid a 15 minute backup from an accident.

Let us know what you find out, Mr. M and I are heading up that way next week.

Good Luck!

We made the trip and it was mostly good. I'm not a fan of narrow winding roads with little shoulders and steep drop offs. Add to that cyclists, some pulling trailers that are in the roadway are scary. Add round topped tunnels marked 12' 1" at the outer edge are not relaxing at all.
