Hwy 395

Where is the long switchback hill outside of Susanville, CA.
I have heard people talk about this "HILL" saying they hate
coming down more than going up.

Is it possible to bypass?

Not sure what hill they are talking about but we have traveled the 395 extensively and have not had any problems with climbing or descending hills in that area of the 395. I think the worst is out of Bridgeport, going up/down the Conway Summit. It is somewhat short but very steep and curvy.

It might not be 395 but CA 36 which heads west out of Susanville. If memory serves me correctly that is a steep curvy portion of highway real close to Susanville.

Even Hwy 36 doesn't have a grade over 6% which isn't bad.

There are no issues on Hwy 395 in California. It's an absolutely gorgeous highway.

If you are coming in from the West it is indeed HY36. It does not become 395 until you leave Susanville headed towards Reno. The hill is steep and long and you are still coming down when you make the turn onto the main drag through Susanville. There is no alternate route that I am aware of. We have been taking this route for years with travel trailers and motorhomes with a toad and have experienced no problems. As long as you realize it is long and just gear down or use a compression brake to keep your speed down you will be just fine. Obey the speed limits through Susanville and on over to Nevada there seems to always be one or two cops out there.
