There are some great boondocking sites off Movie Road in Lone Pine, my profile pic is out there, Mt. Whitney in the background. Boulder Creek RV Campground is a nice one with hookups in the same area. There's lots to see in this area, and you can drive up into the Sierra via Horseshoe Meadows Road, Whitney Portal Road, or Onion Valley road in Independence. Fishing is currently opened early from Lone Pine Creek to Independence Creek, and the full opener is last Saturday in April I believe. The Owens River is open all year. If you like off-roading, there are lots of places to go in southern Inyo County including Cerro Gordo Ghost Town and Mazourka Canyon Road.

There are several county campgrounds between Lone Pine and Bishop that are primitive but have large spaces and are $10 a night.

Bishop has a lot of amenities, look up the Bishop Chamber of Commerce for more info. Too much to type here. Same for Town of Mammoth Lakes.

Glass creek Campground is a nice primitive campground north of Mammoth.

The Bridgeport and Twin Lakes area is really nice, but can be pretty chilly in the spring and fall so be prepared if you want to stay there.

As others have stated, the weather can be unpredictable, remember 395 has several passes on the way to Reno, topping out at over 8000' if I remember correctly (Devils Gate Summit).

A note on BLM and USFS campgrounds in the area - there are many to choose from and many are in great locations, but call ahead first to ensure they will be open in April. Many close for the winter.

Have fun!

Last year in early May we stayed at the fair grounds in Bishop. Full hookups 30 & 50 amp for $25 a night. The sight we stayed at was new as well as many others that were empty. Nothing fancy, they are level gravel sites. You can reserve in advance or show up before the office closes at 4 PM. It's very quiet and well lit. It's a good place to dump your tanks and fill with water. We just stayed one night on the way to Lake Tahoe. It would be a nice place to use for home base to explore the area. The picture full of RV's is during Mule Days Memorial day weekend.

We made reservations for the end of April @ Boulder Creek RV. Keeping our fingers crossed on the weather.

Another point about Boulder Creek, they don't charge extra for pets like most parks do. At least not when we stayed there last year. We had three dogs with us.

And they have a very large fenced in dog play area. Ours had a great time making new friends.
