Don't go all the way up to Denver.
Instead, from Creede go south on 149 to 160 at South Fork to Alamosa, CO (Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Park) to Walsenberg, CO.
Then 10 to Rocky Ford, CO to 96E to Eads, CO.
Then north on 287 to 40 east to Oakley, KS at I-70.
633 miles.

Yup, I don't even know why my fingers said Denver. Well yes I do, for some reason I was thinking about leaving from Granby and not Creede. A old fart moment is my only excuse

I'll toss this out there, those of you that have driven that road do you think the tow from Granby to Creede is a reasonable tow for 1 day? It's only 270 miles and even though longer than I normally like to go in a day I was thinking about doing it.
We have visited Breckenridge and Buena Vista and Salida before so didn't figure by driving through that we would be missing anything.

Thinking.... - JMHO - that that will be on average closer to a 35 - 40 MPH average speed/drive time - RT 9 is just usually slower......so might look to stop somewhere along the Collegiates as you head south, right near the 1/2 way point. With K's for Lunch and Quincy's - Good Steak - for Dinner, reason enough to stop along the way. Some great drives and Hikes in the Collegiates
K's - https://www.zomato.com/buena-vista-c...ena-vista/menu

Quincy's is also in Salida if you wanted to go that far.
Little side note, Gunnison will have a Wal*Mart (and other resupply stores) if you need to resupply before getting deep in the Woods/Mountains and Creede. A stop there and a drive up to Crested Butte would be fun, making the arrival to Creede Easy.
Just a few thoughts as you lay out the trip,
