We are wondering what the U.S. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road)through The Smokey Mountains is like. Is it 2 or 4 lane and O.K. for towing from Cherokee, NC to Gatlinburg TN.
Any recommended campgrounds for the first week in March on either side in NC or TN.

Thanks, LIKENIT

Hi LIKENIT,
The road is a Federal highway. This means it is constructed and maintained to Federal standards. The road is two lane. The road quality is very good. I've traveled the road, several times, in the last couple of years, with my signature coach and a towed vehicle that weighs a little over 5K lbs. If I wanted to, I can hold the speed limit on the up side. I go slower on the down side. The road does wind through the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. If you have anything above 13' there are a few overhanging tree branches that can come in contact.

For the CG question consider:
On the Tenn side River Plantation 800-758-5267
On the NC side Cherokee/Great Smokies KOA 800-562-7784

I have no problem driving this road or staying at either of these CGs.

G'Morning LIKENIT from Casa Grande, AZ: We've stayed in both Gatlinburg and Townsend on the N.(Tenn.) end of the route you're inquiring about and that drive over the top from Gatlinburg to Cherokee is beautiful. Now, we have not taken our MH over...but...we've seen quite a few rigs in the 30 - 40 ft. length pulling toads over this route (going both ways) and they seem not to have any troubles. It's a pretty good grade on both sides, so go easy and use engine brakes, but it's all good wide pavement with various pull outs ya might fit in if other's not blocking them. Gatlinburg is fun, BUT...VERY, VERY congested (touristy) so we like staying over in Townsend. Can still easily visit Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge without the frenetic atmosphere. OH..also, two things...once parked, DO take your toad or two vehicle into see Cade Cove in the mtns. just immediately S. of Townsend, and....when at the top of Newfoundgap, DO take the little paved spur road out to Clingman's Dome. It's an fine drive for your rig and big lots to turn around in and stop. Clingman's Dome is one place to get those quintessential Smokey Mountain photos we all have seen...ya know..the ones with those blue appearing mtns. and the white smokey fog banks between. Have a great time...Oh, Oh, the buffet at the Casino in Cherokee is TOP NOTCH!! Enjoy. Steve & Lynette

Thanks for the help on the route. We wound up going to Asheville first for 5 days and then took I-40 to 231. We stayed in Pigeon Forge.
Took the trip over the Smoky Mountains to Cherokee and to Cade's Cove with our truck.
Can't imagine the crowd in the peak seasons. It was even crowded on weekends when we were there.

Thanks, LIKENIT
