Hwy 50 from Grand Junction to Colorado Springs
I will be traveling from Grand Junction area to Colorado Springs area. I am driving a FordF250 pulling a 35’ 5th wheel. I am considering taking Hwy 50 as opposed to I70. Driving west from Lakewood to Grand Junction on I70 was stressful enough until the last pass. How does Hwy 50 compare? How many passes?
Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated!

I have taken that route in a 40foot MH towing a jeep. Monarch is the only pass. Beautiful drive. We had no issues, although I am not familiar with your towing capacity. For sure better than 70 and 25, IMO.

We'd also take Hwy 50 over I-70. At Monarch Pass eastbound you'll have approx. 10 miles of 6% grade downhill. I assume the uphill won't be an issue for you. Try to avoid weekends (popular route by RVers and others) and you won't have to encounter much traffic at all. It's a very scenic route. Downhill - shift into lower gear before you even begin the downhill; not in the midst of it. That way you don't have to touch the brakes often. Also, pumping the brakes is better than a constant foot on them. Enjoy the trip! You're in the mountains so you have to exit them some way.

Just came over Monarch Pass a week ago in out MBS Sprinter towing a Jeep JK. Beautiful drive as all the trees are tuning colors about a month early. No problems with the roads, just watch the downgrades.

FYI: Sherpa Cafe right on 50 in Gunnison is awesome (Nepalese food). Also, The Thai Cafe after Monarch pass on the corner of 50/285 is very good. Both are easy stops.
