Just went over it a month ago. Road construction from 99 for about 3 or 4 miles with some lane shifting. I had no other issues. The pavement isn't bad just watch for slow truck going up Tehachapi.

Agree, and no real alternative.

Went over it two days ago.
All 4 lane highway now except for about three miles near Kramer Junction where it crosses 395. That should be finished in a month or so.
Excellent road now.

Drove Mojave to Bakersfield at end of October. Not terrible that I remember. Spent the Night at the Tehathapi airport. Great little park. Pat

We are heading up to Oregon for the holiday and we are out off of the 15 freeway. Instead of taking the 210 back through LA to the 5 freeway I was thinking that I would take the 15 north to the 58 west to the 5? Any advice on that route, hills through Tehachapi or anything that I need to know about? Or is the 210 to the 5 the best way as Apple maps says? I am in a Class A towing a Chevy Traverse. Thanks!

Check the weather reports. Tehachapi can get snow sometimes.

I avoid going through L.A. on 210 and always go across 58 to Bakersfield. Headed there tomorrow as a matter of fact.
Tehachapi has a steep downgrade headed west into Bakersfield but less steep than I 5 on the Grapevine.
58 can get snow but is kept pretty clear as it's a major truck route.

Doesn't Hwy 58 get snow about the same time as the Grapevine?
We are heading that way from WA in two weeks and are planning on taking Hwy 58 so we miss 210 and the LA traffic. Of course, we will adjust our route if the weather/road conditions dictate.

Yes they are similar on snow but what happens is they close the Grapevine (LA drivers and snow don't mix) and reroute over 58 through Tehachapi. The one time I saw snow on 58 was when the Grapevine was closed and 10 million trucks were using 58.
The snow didn't have a chance to lay on the highway.

I'm kind of a local and travel it frequently. Take 58 to Hwy 99 in Bakersfield. Then take 99 north to Hwy 46. Take 46 West to I-5.
Some folks cut over to I-5 using the Rosedale Hwy in Bakersfield but that area has grown a lot and to me it much easier just to take 99 up to 46.

[QUOTE= 58 west to the 5? Any advice on that route, [/QUOTE]
The last time I drove that route (August) there was serious construction beginning on 58 just east of 99 and continuing on west. I would take 58 to 99 to 46 to I-5 if I were you. I actually prefer that route even if no construction.
