Has anyone traveled from Sedona, AZ to Flagstaff on Hwy 89A. Will be traveling in a 40ft Class A towing a toad.

I've traveled 89A on a motorcycle and it's a beautiful drive, but I wouldn't take my 40' over it. It's fairly narrow, winding canyon road and there is one section that has several hairpin switchbacks with a fast several hundred foot climb (or descent if you are southbound).

I towed a 28ft TT down it from Flagstaff to Sedona - I wouldn't do it again. I think there is a 50ft overall length limit on the road.

Did it in April before buying a tow dolly. It is a beautiful drive. I plan to enjoy it more by leaving the motor and driving it in the toad next year.

Thanks for all the information. Decided not to take that route with the MH. Guess Iíll just go back 179 to the 17. Thanks again for the info.

Agree with all said so far. I have been somewhat tempted to try it at an off-hour with my 38 footer but have always thought the better of it. Only 15 minutes longer via 179 and I-17.

As stated, there is a 50' total length limit. However, the main problem, for me, is how narrow some places are, especially in some of the turns. Meeting an on-coming coach or truck in the wrong place could ruin your day. Some sections are also steep enough to require a good supplemental brake system. We live in Flagstaff and drive 89A all the time, but I would never drive my coach on it.

Just came from Flagstaff through Jerome to Prescott in a 30' class c. Wouldn't do that drive again. 50' is too lenient, 30 is too big from my experience. As stated above, the width is a major factor.

Never again. My coach is only 28 feet plus a 12 foot motor cycle trailer, our GPS took us that way.As mentioned it was a beautiful drive.

I asked my son about it as I know he has taken buses through there hauling kids to camp. His comment was it was manageable but not desirable. That is from somebody who spends 5 or 6 days a week behind the wheel of a bus. That was why I advised staying on the Interstate in another thread. Going this way shaves off 20 minutes but most folks probably lose that in slowing down for conditions.

mlgunn,
Yep, been on it twice with a motorhome and towing. The first time was with a '99 Fleetwood Bounder 34V towing a 16' enclosed trailer and the second time was with our present coach, an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the 330HP C-7 CAT and, towing a Jeep. Yeah, it's a twisty-turny road for sure but it's doable. I kind-a equate it to the "Million dollar highway" between Ouray and Durango CO. and the 66 from Klamath Falls OR to Medford OR, talk about twisty turny. Only that 550 out Ouray is not quite as tight as 89. Been on that 550 several times towing. Something like this is all in what your comfort level is. If you're not sure, take the other route.
