I-10 Houston on a Saturday

I've searched the forum and read differing opinions and would like an update please. We'll be headed west in a 45 ft coach pulling a jeep and passing thru Houston at about 11 AM today (Saturday). Are we better off going straight thru on I-10 or going around on one of the loops? (If around, best route?) Thanks for any input!

Shouldn't be a problem going straight thru on I-10 Saturday morning. Watch out for toll roads if you go around on one of the loops. The last time I was there I found no option to pay cash, you must have a transponder or exit the freeway and drive on the frontage road.

Since we will be in Houston in late May and spurred by this discussion, I called Texas toll authorities. We don't have a EZ-Pass transponder or such since we don't have toll roads out west (we believe in freeways). The response (exact words), "At this moment we do not charge out-of-state vehicles for tolls in Texas."

In response I asked, "What about next week or next month since I understand what next moment means?" It became clear that "at this moment" was the official language. I did pin this government official down when he said there are no plans to charge out-of-state vehicles for tolls in Texas in 2016.

Then he asked if I had any other questions. My reply, "Not at this moment."

I did it in a Friday afternoon Labor Day weekend last summer. Just stay in the middle lane and go with the flow. I did fine, with no accidents that day.

I-10 through Houston on a Saturday or Sunday of a non-holiday weekend isn't normally a problem. Before noon is usually best if you can choose.
That is unless the idiots in charge decide to close two of the three lanes for routine maintenance!
Guess how I know that!!!!

Check Houston Transtar for road closures.

You will find that to be true almost everywhere. One time in a rental car or out of state tags gets ignored. Start going through them daily in the same area and not paying then you will get a notice in the mail sooner or later.
