I-10 LA to I-20 in TX then to Birmingham

How's I-10 to run in a 40 ft gasser and toad from LA to the I-20 intersection? Then I-20 to Birmingham, AL

Road condition good? Safe to travel? Good campgrounds? Recommendations/

Are you taking 59 north through meridian? Or 65 to Montgomery? Either way, they are both in decent shape. You should have no problems.

I would prefer I-20. It misses San Antonino and Huston. Lots of stories of ruff road in LA.
Some parks to stay at east of Dallas.

After the I-10 I-20 intersection planning on going straight across to Montgomery then up 85 to home.

Any safety concerns on I-10?

I'm thinking the OP's LA is Los Angeles and not Louisana. LA to I-20 in west Texas then I-20 to Birmingham

An alternative would be I-10 to I-15 to I-40, then cut south somewhere in eastern New Mexico or in the Texas panhandle to get to I-20. This is a more scenic route and less stressful (avoids Phoenix and El Paso). I drove it this summer with little problem, although I wasn't in an RV.

Definitely the Vicksburg Ameristar RV park. Casino shuttle right from your RV and back, seafood buffet on weekend nights, regular buffet the other nights. For non smokers wanting to hit the slots, I suggest going downstairs, cooler and less smoke.

Sorry i should have spelled it out as there are several LA's (lower Alabama, Louisiana, Los Angeles) I'm in Los Angeles California (Actually downtown Long Beach) heading east on Friday. Sorry for the confusion. Good info here though and much appreciated.

I've been thinking of taking I-405, 73, and 5 down to 52 and the San Clemente Freeway over to 8 and across to 10. Might get me out of LA and its traffic sooner? Plus maybe a bit ore scenic? (15 and 49 do nothing for me LOL)

I-20 is fine until Louisiana. After crossing into Louisiana the road was terrible until you get to the border of Mississippi. A few miles of construction around Tuscaloosa in Alabama then you are home free.

From Los Angeles take I-10 past Palm Springs crossing into AZ. Use the Phoenix bypass, Hwy 89 south to Gila Bend connecting onto I-8 east to avoid Phoenix. You will reconnect onto I-10 east at Casa Grande. There is also a bypass for El Paso but I don't recall the exact route. After Van Horn TX you will connect with I-20.

Thanks folks I'm on the way. Stayed at Gila Bend KOA last night then on to El Paso and a very enjoyable ride today. Off to Abilene TX tommorrow. Now dreading I-20 in Louisiana

We've made it across on the way east now to Longview Texas having left Long Beach, CA last Friday. On our way to Meridian Miss a little later this morning then across to home near LaGrange, GA tommorrow via Montgomery and I-85.

We really did not enjoy traffic and road surface conditions departing LA and across California. Tense doesn't describe it adequatly-- and I am a regular Atlanta driver used to those conditions. We left at about 5 in the morning and took us about 2 hours to clear the metropolitan area averaging 50 MPH. Across California road surface was rough.The 55 mph speed limit in California (towing a toad)is a real pain. I'm a typical 64 mph cruiser.

I've driven almost every state in the union and much of Canada (Alaska included -except Wis and Hawaii) and the California roads especially in metropolitan areas, IMHO were about the worst we've ever seen. In comparison I'll take the Alaska Highway over California roads any day.

On I-10 going across AZ and NM all was well. Nicer scenery, light traffic and good road surface conditions. We enjoyed our stay at the KOA in Gila Bend using the west bypass around Phoenix- its going through an upgrade into a very nice park. Driving through these two states was relaxing and enjoyable.

I was surprised at how big El Paso was. That's one large city-- and is spread out for a while. Thankfully we had stayed north of the City at the KOA (a gravel parking lot,but good for an overnight) in Anthony, TX and made the run through the city with no traffic at 6 AM on a Sunday morning. Any other time would likely have been a challenge as there is a good bit of construction there.

Texas road surface conditions are pretty decent. Scenery in TX-- well we were rather bored out of our gourds-- and it is a long piece of road. Took 2 days and 3 nights to cross TX (we do about +/- 350 a day) Since getting on 20 in west TX all had been well. My only gripe about TX interstates is it has very short exit and entrance ramps with virtually no decel or accel lanes- other than that the roads are very good. I-20 around Dallas mid day was easy.

Today is a run across Louisiana and a hunk of Miss. on 20- and well we'll see?????

Overall other than being a major truck route the I-10 and 20 corridor is a great road.We seemed to fit in well with the flow even though we ran at 64 mph. In general traffic on the 10-20 corridor until now was light by eastern standards.

I'll give you a read on Louisiana and Miss later.

I really like us 280 out of birmingham down into georgia. You could pick up 85 in Opelika and a short drive up to LaGrange.
