I-35 MN to TX ?s

I35 Minn to Texas. We plan to take I35 until it ends.
Is there a preferred route around Oklahoma City? I read it's miserable ?
Any comments or other things to avoid, plan for, unique stops to consider would be much appreciated.

I travel through OKC every fall going to football games in Norman. When coming in from the North stay in the inside lane ( furthest to left) which will take you to the split where I35 continues South (Dallas exit). Then continue to stay inside until you can comfortably move to a center lane. Entering into the Norman area stay in the middle until the Robinson Street then if I'm remembering correct you should be in the second lane from the left which will eliminate construction. Hopefully the construction hasn't changed the flow much since fall. Anyway, OKC traffic isn't that bad. As with all big cities drive thru during off peak rush hours.

Our experience has been that Dallas/Ft Worth is worse. Take I35W through Ft Worth.

Right off I-35/80 in Des Moines is the Living History Farms and Machine Shed restaurant. A must overnight stay there. Camp at Walnut Woods State Park on the southside of Des Moines. Look it up and reserve a spot. It's a small quiet little park but nice and well kept up.

Take Mo Hwy 152 and I-435 towards the west out of Liberty Mo. to get around Kansas City. Otherwise you're knee deep in the city. In Kansas the highway is a toll road so beware of that cost. If you take I-435 on the east side of KC you go right past Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums. Look into a Royals game, the fountains in center field are still a treat.

OKC is not as bad as said earlier. Visit the Cowboy Hall of Fame or National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum as it is known today. Also the site of the old federal building is a humbling visit.

As said earlier I-35e in the Dallas area is a pure mess to avoid at all cost. I-35w is a little better but construction is rampant in and around the DFW area. Do not get off I-35w onto any perimeter roads. It's better to go straight through. If you do stop be sure and visit the stockyards and Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth.

The road is very busy going through Austin. It's better to take the toll road Tx Hwy 130 around the east side picking up Tx Hwy 45 going back to I-35 on the south side of Austin. But if you stop the Johnson Library is a must visit.

To get around San Antonio it's best to take the Tx Hwy 1604 loop west. Once back on I-35 it's straight on to Laredo. If you do stop visit the Alamo and Riverwalk. This is a very nice area.

Really good advice. Also the 45th Infantry Museum right off I35 is a great free visit. Outstanding Museum.

They have every one of Bill Mauldin's cartoons of Willie and Joe framed on the wall.

Welcome

Cowboy Hall of Fame is less than a mile away.

I-35 thru downtown Dallas is terrible, lots of construction. I live in the Dallas area and avoid I-35 like the plague if at all possible!!!

Also be aware I-35 is a toll road in much of Kansas with some narrow toll booth lanes.

You are a glutton for punishment! I-35 in general, is a make work project for expenditure of tax dollars. It is also the major NAFTA highway for marginally insured, if at all, trucks from Mexico. If you must head south plan on US and state highways from OK to Laredo, they are in good shape and you can enjoy the country. If you Bypass DFW, Austin, San Antonio you will have a much less stressful trip.
