I haven't been keeping track, but is I-40 open yet thru the canyon. They had a rocl slide recently, and when they do, it usually stays closed for a couple months. This years slide was on the Tn side, so you might want to check with their DOT.

You didn't say where you were headed, but look at 75 all the way to Knoxville, more traffic but less hills.

We have driven I40 through the Smokies several times with our motorhome and towd and had no issues. Good idea to check road/rock slide status. They seem to have one somewhere every year and the detours are not always the most pleasant roads to drive.

Hadn't heard about a recent rock slide. Last I knew of was a couple years ago, long since repaired. Other than that, we've used that same route many times and plan to again in about 4 weeks. It's a beautiful drive through the mountains.

Looks like it is still closed.

I-40 rock slide could be cleared by late April :: WRAL.com

Yes I40 is open, still some road work going on, but open. Where are you heading that GPS is sending you that way and have you Google mapped it to see alternates?

I drove that section 3 weeks ago and I couldn't see anything, no lane closures, nothing.

Depends on where you are going. If your leaving Coco Beach tell us where your destination is. I travel that section of I-40 several times a year and it's not usually that bad.

Sorry about the incorrect information I posted. I should have read more before I posted that link and wrong info.

I am in Upstate SC.. I took the smokey mountain parkway route a couple springs ago due to a mudslide on 40 blocking the road.. Beautiful drive but not for the faint of heart and I did not come through un-scathed (Had to do some major awning repair where I tagged the mountain)

Last spring I took I-40 no problems.
