299 is definitely not a good idea in an rv. I drive up into oregon and take 199 to avoid 299.

Out of curiosity what did you decide?

Pretty drive. You get to see a lot of the lake and surroundings that way.

Red face Highway 20: 101 > I5

Hwy 20 was our first drive to get to I-5. We often come down 101 in early January to avoid the Siskiyou pass because of snow. We found Hwy 20 along the top of Clearlake to be a frustrating drive because of the many small towns you pass through with their in town speed limits.

OMG

We took CA-36 to Fontana a couple years ago. Missed CA-20 in our newbieness and figured "what the heck?". Going E to W it starts out rough and gets worse by stages. My son went up to the loft after about 15 miles and stayed there quaking the rest of the trip. My wife lost ten pounds sweating. When we got to Fontana, our dog show friends just shook their heads and laughed at us. I know all this has been stated already, but I just want to emphasize the point.

Cheers
Mike
