I-70 Carlisle, PA to Colorado Springs, Co

My son is trading his MH for one in CO. We'll leave Carlisle about 5pm Thursday and drive straight thru to Colorado Springs. Expect to head back Saturday PM.

I know I-70 is a straight shot but are there any cities we need to use a by-pass or any major construction delays (day or night work)?

There is a construction zone affecting both directions of I-70 about 6 miles west of PA Turnpike exit 75 (New Stanton). It's between exits 51 A-B (PA-31) and 46 A-B (PA-51). All lanes of traffic are being maintained, but there are lane shifts and you could be riding on what was the berm of the road or a temporary roadway. There are also Jersey barriers that can make for tight clearances. The zone has a 45 mph speed limit. There were no traffic delays when I passed through there the weekend of 10/02 - 10/03, but that was two weeks ago. It appears that they are rebuilding the Smithton (Exit 49) interchange and widening and/or reloacting some of the roadway.

Frank,
Thanks for this report.

I received your other post by e-mail notification but not sure why it isn't showing here. Our plan is to take I76 to I70.

That was me, Bob. I deleted it. I kind of read into your initial posting the wrong way and when you mentioned leaving from Carlisle to Colorado Springs and I-70 was a straight shot. I thought, "Hmmm... he's going I-70 from Carlisle to Colorado Springs? But, I-70 doesn't pass through Carlisle.". So, I entered a posting saying something to that effect. But right after I posted it, I reread your posting again and figured out that you were really picking up I-70 (at Breezewood) from Carlisle. So, not to feel like a total idiot... I deleted it. Sorry about that!

I just did that trip in July and don't recall any major contruction sites but there is a lot of road work on all interstates.

Beware of the cross winds in Kansas (blew open my slide out awning). You can also turn off I70 in Limon, CO and take Rt. 24 down into the Springs. Nice KOA in Limon.

I know you need to get there and back quick but take time to rest and be safe!

go straight thru indianapolis. IN as the by pass around it is being rebuilt and is a mess. 70 is rough road thru there but better than bypassing at the present. The usual amount of lane closures in Ohio

RVThere & RVhauler,

Thank you.

It would be nice to take it slow and enjoy this part of the country but my son and d-i-l need to be back for work on Monday. My son, his f-i-l and I will share the driving so we'll each be able to rest.

Right now the St Louis area has all kinds of construction going on both sides of the river (Missouri and Illinois). Especially on the roads leading downtown and past the Arch. The work is not one big project but several small ones, especially on weekends. For up to date info try Missouri Department of Transportation or Illinois Department of Transportation

I would suggest taking I-270 around the north side of St Louis to avoid the downtown area. On this route you leave I-70 at the intersection with I-55 and meet back up with I-70 on the west side of town. You can miss some traffic by taking MO-370, built to interstate standards, from I-270 and then hit I-70 in St Charles across the Missouri river.
