Hello all, looking to take a different route to Myrtle Beach this April other than over to Erie P.A. and south ( We have gone this way many times ). Looking at going through N.Y./P.A./V.A. just not sure about I-81 from Harrisburg P.A. thru to I-64 in V.A. as we have never traveled this route. Any input would be appreciated...

Thanks Joe

There's nothing particularly difficult or interesting about I-81 in that region; we've done it many times. There are lots of trucks, but there are on I-95 also, so there's no real difference.

I live not far from I-81 in Virginia. It is not a bad highway, but has lots of semi traffic. You can take I-81 to I-66 to US-17 to I-95, or I-81 to I-64 to I-95, or I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95. Using I-64 will be longer by a couple of hours. I-81 is in the mountains and you need to keep a close eye on the weather. What might be rain on I-95 could very well be snow on I-81. The trip on I-81 is much more scenic than I-95. Hope this helps.

It's a little further for me to go to Philly via I-81 than it is to hit I-95 in NoVA, but I much prefer I-81. I tend to let the weather forecast determine my route as this is a trip I make (car and hotel, not camper) each January.

81 is a great road and no tolls, there are a lot of trucks but they don't hinder the travel of a motor home, faster cars yes but the MH travels at nearly the same speed (they cruise at about 66 mph so stay around 63 and you'll have absolutely no issues). There are a couple of Wal-marts as you head south towards 64 if you need to take a nap. most of the rest stops are small and loaded with trucks most times. The road surface is in great shape so that's a plus. You can take 17 south off of 64 to keep off of 95 even longer. Or keep going until you hit 77 for Charlotte then 74 over and avoid 95 all together
