We are contemplating a trip to Mexico beginning in January 2006. This will be our first winter trip and we are unsure of winter road conditions. Any recommendations for a route from Boise? In particular, is it better to travel through CA than to try to go through all the colder mountain states?

Thanks, Betty

I would take Hwy #30 at Bliss to Hwy #93 (west of Twin Falls) then to Ely, NV. Then Hwy #6 west from Ely to the junction of NV #318 then on south rejoining #93 by Ash Springs. This is a very good quality road surface and little traveled. A long distance between fuel stops though.

Check out freecampgrounds.com for locations to stop on that route.

Yes it is possible to get some snow that way, however it is still High Desert. Typically there is much less snow/fog than what you can get going I-15 from the "lake effect" in the Brigham City to Provo Area.
