I plan on spending the winter in Tempe AZ. I will be leaving Indianapolis around the 28th of Dec. Will take I 65 southand to Nashville Tn, I 40 west to Flagstaff, I 17 south to Tempe( scared of I 17 but no other way to destination). I am wondering if there is a big problem this time of year. Do they usually have big snow storms that would make this trip uncomfortable? I am sure ther will be some snow, however, do they have the type of storms where the snow lingers weeks at a time?

Bob, we will be leaving New England about the same time heading for same area. We will take 40 to Memphis and then go south on 30 to Dallas area and then I-10 across TX, NM and into AZ. You not only need to be mindful of the weather in Flagstaff but northern NM as well where some snow storms cause 40 to be closed. We have done your route and the route I outlineed and prefer the latter. Ken, '04 DSDP...

Bob

I think Ken has it pretty much correct, although, I-10 weather is not guaranteed either even though your chances of bad weather are cut considerably in my opinion. I just think I-10 is the most boring highway in the country. I think I would use the route you mentioned except I would cut across from Holbrook to Payson and come into Tempe sorta' the back way. It is almost all two lane with some passing lanes. We've used that cut off for 18 years going between Denver and Mesa and then return the end of December. All you really need to do is keep checking weather.com for a couple of weeks before you leave, in case you need to change your route due to weather, and check it while enroute as you get the chance.

Thanks for both replies. I think I will be going throug Memphis and Jackson Ms. to make a quick visit, then go to I-20 to I-10 on into Tempe. On return, I might take the Payson -Holbrook route.

Looks like an interesting route. We will have parallel routes. I will pick up I-20 at Jackson Ms. and continue west to on I-20 to Van Horn Tx then pick up I-10 and continue into Tempe.

Be advised that I40 in Memphis is horrid due to construction. We just came East(Nov 18) through the mess. I40 is restricted to one lane and 25mph for about a mile, twisting through concrete barriers 10' apart. Had I known, I'd have taken another route. If I were to leave Indiana now and head West I would take I70 West to I 57 South to I55 South and bypass Memphis by connecting to I40 West of the construction..

Thanks Ray,In This is what this site is all about. Good information. I usually take the route you recommend but I hate to go through Blytheville Ark. bad-bad road for me. Also, I have a friend I wanted to see in Nashville. If I might change my route and go to Birmingham Alabama and pick up I-20and proceed from there.

OOPS! I had a(senior moment) brain meltdown, The construction mess was on I30 on the West edge of Memphis just prior to connecting with I40, so my wife/navigator says. I apologize for the incorrect information. It still may pay to phone the TN highway info line.

Robert, they 'shaved' I-55 around Blytheville so you don't thump yourself to death.

Mushroom. thanks for that information. I always hate this area. It makes me thinks something is wrong with my tires. If you have time could you tell me when the last time you travled this road.

Sorry this has taken so long,
I head up through there about 8 times a year. The shaving was observed in March of 2005. By April when I ran back up they were finished and it was clean.
Still not a perfect road. I do wish folks would consider planting a tree or two along there.
