Indianapolis to Elkhart Lake Wisconsin

Looking for alternate route traveling from Indy to Elkhart Lake Wi. rather than using I-65 to Gary In. and then thru Chicago what are my options without going to far out of my way ?? Thanks for any suggestion..

Haven't gone through Chicago for years since I bypass everything by going through Rockford, but if you must go through Chicago, my memory is to use I-94 and I-294 (Tri-State toll road). Others will likely chime in with better information.

If you are going to a race at Road America, the bratwurst are great!

The only real option for bypassing Chicago is I-74 over to I-39. That route adds about 120 miles and you still have to deal with Milwaukee. Going a little farther up and then over via US151 avoids Milwaukee, but adds another 30 miles.

The best route is still I-65 to I-80/94 and then stick with I-294 until it merges back with I-94 north of the city. You don't actually go through the city of Chicago, but stay in the suburbs.

I miss Road America. I haven't been there in almost 10 years.

If you want to avoid Milwaukee ... from Rockford stay on I-39 to the north side of Madison ... take US-151 (all four lane) to Fond du Lac ... and then WI 23 to Elkhardt Lake.

Easy and scenic drive

Chicago can be just fine or not, it depends on time of day. I'd only plan a trip through the city between 10am and 2pm. Even then any wreck can create havoc on any freeway, even the one you picked as the diversion.

I only travel through Chicago using Google Maps or Waze and follow the traffic guidance it provides. Don't second guess it. Take the route it suggests.
