Journey Through Hallowed Ground

We are planning our trip home from Florida. We were planning to visit Monticello, the home of President Jefferson. While reading about it I came upon the Journey Through Hallowed Ground website and bought the travel book by the same name on Amazon.

It is a national heritage area that runs from Monticello to Gettysburg. It is 180 miles long and 75 miles wide encompassing scenic areas, historic sites and homes both from revolutionary war times to the civil war.

Would any of you have experience with this traveling this route with your trailer or motorhome? My book from Amazon should get here in a couple of days. I know about my choices for campgrounds near Monticello but am wondering about others along the way. Of course it depends how long we spend at each place.
Would very much appreciate any experience you might have with the area.

We spent three days at Gettysburg a few years ago before we bought our fiver. Having a guide is well worth the money. Our guide drove us in our minivan so that we could appreciate things without having to look at the road.
Having had this experience I think that we will have a private guide at any of the Civil War battlefields that offer them.

Thank You,
M2D

There is another great book you may be interested in "Hallowed Ground, A Walk Through Gettysburg" by James McPherson. He is a professor at Princeton and an expert on Gettysburg and the Civil War (he has written lots of books on the American Civil War). The audio book would be very helpful when touring the battlefield or even just for general information.

We have no experience driving an rv in this area. We had a rental car when we visited some years ago.
When you visit Monticello try to take in President Monroe's home too. The architectural differences between the homes is interesting. Jefferson and Monroe were friends and their homes are within sight of each other.

Have the book and the map. Will be in the area June 25 - July 10.
Will be staying at Charlottesville KOA, Bull Run Regional Park, and Codorus State Park.

So much to see and do in this area with Shenandoah Valley - Revolutionary War thru Civil War. Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland (Monroe) and Michie Tavern are very close together.
