Knoxville, TN - Loop or Straight Through?

I will be heading to Sevierville, TN tomorrow coming from Chattanooga. Which route would be the best through Knoxville?

Straight through on I40.

We drove through Knoxville about a year and a half ago. We were spending some time in the Smokies and headed west from there. I don't remember anything special about passing through Knoxville on I-40 though. It was straight thorough without issues.

I travel that area regularly and it's almost always clear driving until you get to the main Sevierville exit that leads to the Smokies, then it's going to be heavy traffic all to the way to the park. Be advised that there is road construction going on along the route from the highway almost to Pigeon Forge and that traffic can be a real bear during peak times along the whole route.

I wouldn't go through Knoxville. I'd get off of I-75 at the Lenoir City/Hywy 95/73 exit and keep on 73 through Wears Valley on over to Highway 71. Sevierville would then be just 4 miles north on 71.

We have friends from Nashville that go to the Great Smokies frequently and they clued us in on that route. We did it last June and 95/73 was a very good road, not a lot of traffic and pretty scenic. The first half of the route, over to Walland, is four lane, the rest two lane but very good shape.

I see that you posted yesterday, so you already drove to your destination. Some good suggestions were posted. But, just wanted to say...enjoy the rally! Tons of Tiffins there. We could not make it.

We drove straight through with no issues and will be taking the same route back home.

Hi Krashqueen,
Unless you are arriving on a Friday or leaving on a Sunday exit 407 and RT 66 is okay to use. The construction is limited to 3 lanes going to 2 lanes over a bridge that is under construction. I am in Sevierville now and this information is current.
