Las Vegas to Mount Rushmore

My wife and I are contemplating a trip from Las Vegas to Mount Rushmore and certainly need your advise, wisdom and knowledge. We will be driving a 40 ft diesel pusher and towing a Honda CRV. No pets.
1) Best time of the year to make the trip?
2) Best route?
3) Places to stay and see in route?
4) Where to stay near Mount Rushmore?
5) Any interesting route for our return?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

What are the things that you like to see/do? ... hike, nature and natural wonders, rodeos, fishing, photography ....

How much time to you have to get there ?... how much time in the Black Hills? ... how much time for the return trip?

There are interesting things to do in Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, and Utah depending on your interests ...

Something over a thousand miles of (to us) boring, dry deserts, mountains if you run the interstates. Sparse population if you don't.
Been most of that route and really don't envy you in the 'between' areas until you get to the Black Hills

We are retired and can take as much time as we want.
Looking for good scenery and historical sites and RV campgrounds with a pool (heated please).

have you thought about going to Jackson, Yellowstone National Park, Cody, and Devil's Tower in Wyoming

In South Dakota: Passion Play in Spearfish, SD, Mt. Rushmore, Needles highway, bison herds and wild burros, cowboy dinner

In Nebraska: Fort Robinson, Chadron State Park, Scotts Bluff

In Colorado: Rocky Mountain National Park, Mesa Verde National Park

In Utah: Monument Valley

In Arizona: Antelope Canyon (near Page), Grand Canyon

Check out Zion, Bryce, Escalante, Goblin Valley, Canyonlands, Arches and Moab south of I-70 in Utah. Dinosaur National Monument and Flaming Gorge before you cross into Wyoming. Ease your way across Wyoming towards Custer SD where you'll find Spearfish Canyon, Vanocker Canyon, Custer State Park, Wind Cave & Jewel Cave parks, Crazy Horse and the Black Hills. Slip back over to Wyoming for Devils Tower. Invest in 2 Atlas's; one with scenic highways identified and another 'Trucker' Atlas highlighting roads suitable for commercial rigs. By comparing the 2 you can identify roads that should be comfortable for you to drive with your rig and pleasantly scenic at the same time. We traveled many of these routes in the last year driving a 40' pusher towing a 12' trailer when we left Vegas to spend the 2014 summer working near Custer. Hope this helps.
