OK, a lot of this stuff is new to me, so I looked up Passport America, Thousand Trails, etc. Sounds promising...

I like how mel s says he just GOES, and doesn't make reservations, and never had any issues. That is what I am hoping for.

You asked for a route to get to Washington....that depends on what you want to see along the way. Do you just want to head straight there as fast as you can and use your time exploring Washington/Oregon? Or are you flexible and just want to take your time getting there and see things along the way?

You also said you're leaving Texas 'soon'. That might eliminate some routes and it's still too early to get into the mountains. I wouldn't try until mid-May for like Yellowstone, Grand Teton Nat'l Park, etc.

If you haven't done them already, here are some parks that you could do before mid-May: Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches. Also, Hwy 395 up the eastern slope of the Sierras is an absolutely beautiful drive. It avoids all the Los Angeles/San Francisco traffic. Many RVers use this route but before you start on it, check the weather. This is the drier side of the Sierras but still gets snow...just depends when you'll be there.

For Washington, we love the Port Townsend/Sequim area and might be a consideration for your new home. There are plenty of ferries to get you to the San Juan Islands, Victoria, B.C. and the greater Seattle area - all good day trips.

In Oregon you might want to consider for your new home Eugene. It's a fun mid-size town and it would get mild winters for year-round. Of course, you'll have lots of choices down the Oregon coast.

For staying, we love the state parks. Also, we're ones that rarely make reservations unless we definitely needed to be there for a reason. There are always places to stay. Plus, we don't do WalMarts.

My wife and I are both in education, so "soon" means after this semester is over.

We don't want to get there ASAP, but we do want to get there quickly....make sense?

We are traveling with a dog and a cat, cat box in the back of the jeep. We plan on less than 400 miles per day, aiming at 250-350 each day. We don't want to spend more than 6 hours or so on the road each day.

We figure that once we get to Point B, we have the rest of our lives to explore everything on the west side of the Great Divide, so we are not all that interested in hitting all the sights. For example, we are not going through Yellowstone, because we can do that on a week-long or 2-week trip later on, even though we are driving right past it on the way up. (That was a "for example", and yes, I realize Yellowstone is on the other side of the Great Divide.)

Our goal at this point is to get to OR/WA and explore for our new home.

And Eugene is WAY up on our list of possible Point Bs. It sounds a lot like Flagstaff, and we REALLY LOVE Flagstaff!

Others will have other opinions, of course, but we find that we average about 50 MPH including short breaks and fuel stops but not including meals. These are interstate or 4 lane divided highway miles. Our "sweet spot" speed is 62 MPH. So, for us, a six hour day works out to be about 250 to 300 daily miles which is a comfortable distance.

I highly recommend campgroundreviews.com. As has already been stated, watch the weather in march in the mountains. March and April are big snow months in Colorado.

Sounds about right for us too. Sometimes we can do 65, but our gas mileage deteriorates quickly. 62-63 seems to be fast enough that the other traffic isn't saluting us with one finger, and we aren't sucking 10-12mpgs (down from the 14-16 we normally get).

As for weather, we are leaving AFTER this school semester is over, so it will be early- mid-June.

We have a couple of long legs in our trip, one around 350 miles, but that is just to GET OUT OF TEXAS!!! The rest of the trip we are trying to go short 200-250 mile jaunts, with a couple of places we think we might stay a couple of days, just to see the sights.

Here is our guestimated trip plan...Which, of course, can change depending on weather, mood, wanting to see some sights off-course, etc.
