Mackinac Bridge

I mentioned to a friend that we were going to use the Mackinac Bridge late this summer. He told me he would not consider crossing it in a Motor Home. Should we have any concerns?

You may have concerns about crosswinds with a high profile vehicle.

we went over it last summer, in our motorhome-I guess it may be an issue if high winds exist- But-the Bridge Tenders will not let you on if you are at peril

I think you will be fine- I was a lot more worried about the Tornadoes & Hail we dodged in Missouri

Just watch the wind advisories. The wind speed is always higher when you go high over the water. Other than that, should be no problem.

I cross the Big Mac every year. There is usually wind up there. They lower the speed limit to 20mph for semi's when it gets windy. If it's real windy they won't let you cross. More times than not, the speed limit is 20 when I cross. Never had a problem.

They used to also have small car alerts for the same reason They would make them go over next to a semi. Not sure they still do this.

The people running the bridge will take care of you.

95% of the summer, the bridge is just fine to cross. It's a beauty. If it's too windy they won't let you cross or will lower the speed.

Don't hesitate to drive it. Folks don't go fast.

We crossed it last year with our 40' Discovery with no problem. Beautiful view from up there.

Also I seem to recall they would drive you across back in the 70's if it was needed. Something I heard before I got promoted from troll to hill billy

Crossed it twice last year in a 40' DP. If the Semi's can go, you can too. Stop and watch before you cross and you will see a multitude of RVs crossing.

Now I will comment that I watched the roadway religiously as I crossed. Got a little problem with fear of highs.

Good Luck

Me, too. Just look straight ahead, but not right down at the road since one of the lanes is see-through grating

Just crossed the bridge yesterday in our toad. They are painting the bridge so the right lane is closed for a portion going both north and southbound. The speed limit is 20 as mentioned all the tractor trailers and motorhomes we saw were in the right lane with their flashers on. I don't think there would be any problem crossing the bridge at all 99% of the time. Don't let worrying about the bridge keep you from enjoying the UP.

tips from trolls

first, we're trolls because we live "under" the bridge we have been crossing the big mac for forty years with a variety of rv's. all previous posters are correct in that the bridge authority will not let you cross until it is entirely safe. as you approach the bridge from north or south you can tune to an am radio station that will give you up to the minute reports on crossing conditions. we think crossing the straights is like a lot of things in life, best enjoyed slowly.
