I agree. Keep heading east all the way to Lubec. The “Downeast “ Maine is lovely and much less crowded. Haven’t had the chance to do interior Maine yet.

I go from Ohio to south/west NH and don't use a single toll road. Go up through Albany and head east (or west if going to Ohio!) Avoid I-90, however. The drive through south Vermont is great, though a two lane road with some significant grades (unavoidable!)

Once on 101 in NH, you can choose a few different routes over to the coast, and have a good drive.


If you feel like stopping in NH for a night or two and want to climb the most climbed mountain in the world, (Mt. Monadnock) let me know.

We've been to Maine many time and it is a beautiful state. Yes there is more to Maine than Bar Harbor, which we feel is too commercialized. At least for us. We prefer Boothbay and Camden. Sebago lake is also worth visiting. As is Sugarloaf mountain in the Carrabassett valley.

I also agree that route one in Maine is a very picturesque drive it takes you through some great little "down east" villages.
