Memphis to Lexington, KY route?
Planning a trip from West Texas to Lexington. I've done the leg from Memphis through Nashville a couple times in the past, but friends going the same way recommend routing up I-55 and through western KY. What about US51 out of Memphis?
Suggestions welcome. I'm traveling by myself pulling a 5th wheel toyhauler (and my sheep dogs).

US 51 from Memphis to The Purchase Parkway at Fulton is a good road, but lots of business and traffic lights until Fulton. The quickest route is I 40 to I 65 to Elizabethtown to the Bluegrass Parkway. It's 20 minutes or more faster than the other route.

wondering how bad the construction was on I-65 - looking to hit 51 up to to purchase parkway. I generally stay off i-55 for the very rough road.

I-65 from Bowling Green north has some construction to add a 3rd lane. We did this route recently and it's OK, however suggest driving at other than peak times. Once you are on the Bluegrass Parkway, easy driving until you come to the Lexington circle road where there is construction at the US-60 interchange.

We live just off of I-69 (Purchase Parkway). We travel US-51 south which becomes I-155 and I-55 to west Memphis often. It is four lane all the way with only a few stoplights at Union City, TN. Going east out of Mayfield, we take I-69 to Mortons Gap and then the Western KY Parkway to Blue Grass Parkway which ends at Lexington. There are a few minor construction projects in KY as they change the interchanges from a toll road type to an Interstate type.
