I22 in Mississippi almost shook us apart last spring so looking for another route there and then try to miss Atlanta. Last year took 280 out of Birmingham (lots of stops) looking at going through Dothan but have heard that is a mess. Ideas? Have plenty of time, not in a hurry. Leaving Dec. 27 don't have to be in Fl until Jan.7

We go on a "Casino Trip" occasionally and one of the stops is Tunica. From Tunica we head south on I-55 to Jackson Ms then East on 20 to the 49. We continue south to Hattiesburg and then to Biloxi. Its cross country but the roads are good. Of course we then stay in Biloxi at Boomtown RV park for a day or so and hit the popular places. From Biloxi we head to Orlando via !-10 and then south on I-75 to to the Turnpike and then Orlando. Be advised the I-4 in Orlando is a MESS. You might consider taking the 429 of the turnpike to avoid the construction. Not sure where you are headed in Orlando but we live a little southwest in Winter Haven off the 27.

Dothan ain't a big a mess as Hotlanta. jump on I-65 at B'ham and follow that south to I-85 east at Montgomery. exit I-85 at exit 9 (US271, TO US 231). follow that south about 7-8 miles and it will dead end into US 231. this will save you a lot of time, miles and frustration vs following I-65 down to where US231 meets it. 231 is a good 4-lane all the way to the FL border. yes, you'll go thru a few towns (Troy, Ozark and Dothan) and yes, you'll encounter traffic in Troy and Dothan. but its a site better than Hotalanta. Troy is not nearly as bad as Dothan and Dothan is maybe 1/10th as bad as Hotlanta. depending on how you drive it's roughly 2-hrs from Montgomery to Dothan.

follow US231 thru Dothan (not Business 231 which will take you thru downtown Dothan) all the way to the Florida border and then to I-10. as you enter Dothan US231 is called Ross Clark Circle. Ross Clark/231 will be a right turn. several miles further US231 will be another right turn at the intersection of US 431/US231. on the SE corner of that intersection is a Flying J. it's roughly an hour +/- from Dothan to I-10, a 3-hr run on I-10 to I-75 and then another 3-hrs +/- to Orlando.

we've been running this route for years now and I think you'll find it worthwhile. good luck.

Wow- I have had a totally different experience on I-22 and travel it frequently in the rig. We have really enjoyed travel along that route. Was there a certain section in Miss. where you experienced a problem?

If you find I-22 to be OK then you might want to go I-22 to I-20 and exit south on US 27 in Carrolton, GA. Then US-27 to I185 in LaGrange. I-185 to GA520/US280 through Ft Benning and down to Tifton and I-75 into FL.

All 4 lane all they way with good speed limits and gentle grades. Totally avoids ATL. No traffic to speak of and an enjoyable ride

US-82 from Montgomery to Eufala to Albany and then US-19 down to I-10 works fine. Nothing exciting, just some towns. I have done US-45/US-82 Tupelo/Columbus/Tuscaloosa/Montgomery a few years ago and I recall some rough pavement and city traffic.

This year I went US-45ALT from Tupelo to Brooksville, jogged east to Pickensville, then down AL-14 and US-48 to Demopolis, then US-80 over to Montgomery. This avoided virtually all traffic but again there were some rough patches. None of the roughness was "bust your springs" jolts, just roughness where repaving was needed.

Some of this is four-lane and some is two-lane, usually very little traffic. I don't do interstates if avoidable.
