Mena AR to Kerrville,TX

I've done Mapquest and MS Trips but I'm especially curious about the best way around Dallas...

Also it's a ten hour poke from Mena to Kerrville and I don't want to get there late in the day,so I'd appreciate some advice...

About a three or four hour trip into Kerrville would put me right...

Hey Boomers, I stuck this down here to try and get an educated guess from some of you...

I'll be leaving my daughter's in Mena,AR and heading to Kerrville which I think is a 9 or 10 hour drive...
As I'm attending a rally there,I'd rather make this a two day trip I think and arrange to arrive in Kerrville right after lunch or so the second day....

Any ideas?

Can you juggle???? Many of us Texas Boomers blow right through Dallas and keep our fingers cross that there will be no traffic accidents to slow us down. (Most of the time, it works) If it doesn't, be prepared for a loooonggg time through Dallas.

Others use the loop, which can be a time saver, if there are problems on the main routes through Dallas. You pay your money and take your chances! Time of day is very very important in trying to get through the big "D". (After 9 am, before 3 pm)

If you can, (my opinion) try to work the Texas 281 south route, it will be one of the prettiest routes in Texas you can drive.

The East loop (I635) connecting you from I30 to I20 to I35 is not too bad depending on what time you hit it. Anywhere in Dallas / Fort Worth is really bad from about 4 PM to 7 PM.

Waco might be a good spot to overnite. It is 235 miles on down I35 to San Antone and over to Kerrville. There is a Flying J on the New Road Exit on the South side of Waco that permits overniters.

Austin is a bear no matter what time of the day so be prepared for stop and go traffic thru there and up to an hour to get through town.

Bob, while I'm a firm believer that the most direct way is the best, if it was me I'd jump off I35 at Georgetown and cross over to 281, then go south from there. I have been through Austin too many times to mention and I hate it. You might get lucky and go right through, then you might not and be there for 2 hours in the traffic. 281 is a much more scenic venue and sure beats I35, especially if you are headed to San Antonio. Since I haven't looked at the map to see where Kerrville is I may or may not be steering you right.

If you come the US281 route (I'd jump over to 281 as quickly as possible - I HATE I35 traffic), you can save a lot of miles and see some beautiful country by turning west on US290 at Johnson City to Fredericksburg, then south on TX16 to Kerrville. Excellent roads (US290 is 4-lane) and nice scenery. Hey, you'll pass within about 8 miles of Luckenbach (made famous by Willie and Waylon)!

If you come the US281 route, there's a nice little RV park in Lampasas where the Texas Boomers held a rally several years ago.

OK....I've looked at this and if I do Lampasas, it's telling me to get off 35 at Belton and take 190 over to 281, but you really got my attention as there's this thing called the "Seven Mile Mountain" near Fort Hood...

Anything to that their Seven Mile Mountain I need to worry about?

Rusty's right about I35 traffic and the drive is a lot more scenic on 281 so go ahead and jump over as soon as you can, be a few more miles but much better for the nerves.

Anyting above 1000 Feet is a "Mountain" to Central Texans.

No hills to climb here.

US190 from Belton to Lampassas is good road in fact from Belton to Copperas Cove is Interstate type 4 lane. That would be an excellent choice.

Be sure and wave when you pass thru Killeen.
