Million Dollar Highway - US 550

Took the toad north from Durango yesterday, towards Ouray. Was not aware of the road being closed 6 days a week, with only an hour open at lunch time. Single lane past a slide event in the canyon with lights controlling traffic. The detour adds 88 miles to your trip.

I would suggest anyone planning on travelling this route in May consider the above. I would also suggest any other relative novice, thinking of driving a 40' MH with toad over this stretch of road, to think twice before attempting this route...even after they fix it.

Heard many stories of the Million Dollar highway, all include disclaimers of not attempting it in an RV. Plan to travel this route in July ( toad only ).

Did you happen to hear when the repairs would be finished?

Why are they calling it the million dollar highway.. That's not far from the cost per mile for all highways.

Someone did a calc on how much it would cost to pave with Gold.. (I think he was putting gold over existing concrete) Cause as you may know the punch line about the rich man getting into heaven (He was allowed to bring one suitcase full of stuff with him from this life, He filled the suitcase with.. Pavement, You brought Pavement (GOLD).)

Well, turns out the concrete costs more per mile than the Gold would.
