We have made the trip a few times and we always stay our first night in Springfield, Il. There is a campground there that is open year around. We avoid Chicago by going I39 west of that mess. From Springfield you can then go south to St. Louis and thence onward.

Another way is to go I35 south to just south of Mason City, Ia. and then take 18 to 218 to 61 to St. Louis. There is another campground just north of Iowa City that is open year round. We came back that way last Spring and it is a nice drive.
