First trip west in April. Planning route I-10 to 8. Any suggestions or warnings. This will be a speed trip not sightseeing. New grandbaby arriving in San Diego.

I10 and I8 through Arizona and Socal should be no problems, except for snowbirds starting to go home now.

There's road construction at the I-10/I-45 area in Houston. I don't know how it will look in April - you can check HERE as your departure date gets closer. You might consider using I-610 or Beltway 8/Sam Houston Tollway to go around the downtown area to the north.

We generally use Loop 1604 north (Anderson Loop) if we're going past San Antonio - it picks up I-10W again on the NW side of San Antonio.

As was mentioned, try to avoid peak traffic hours in both Houston and San Antonio.

It is a long haul across Texas - 810 miles if my memory is correct. Also avoid New Orleans if possible. There is a by-pass north of town. Watch for winds across I-10 in New Mexico. They can get pretty heavy at times. I had a roof blown loose between Deming and Lordsburg about 10 years ago.

Forgot to ask, is this route very mountainous (?), long climbs, steep grades, etc.

You didn't say which route your are taking in. Coming down from LA or across from Yuma or another route?

First post said RT 8. You have one major grade after YUMA it is 10 miles long, keep the rpms up and select the gear you want it will only take 15 min.
I go up and down this grade about 10 times a year 33 FT. Seabreeze and tow a Ranger Pick up.

Yeah, but the speed limit is 80 MPH once you get past Kerrville heading west on I-10.

And the last exit on I-10 at the Sabine river before crossing into Louisiana is at mile marker 880.

I did the opposite trip about 7 years ago bringing my brother in law home to his house in MS after a deployment on the USS Stennis. We were in his old Ford pickup towing his Escape on a tow dolly.

Agree to watch out for the winds in NM. Also bring some CDs to listen to for that long trip across TX. There are places on I10 where it is so remote you can't get a radio station!

We're currently in New Orleans and just made the drive from San Diego. No real problems with the roads other than the advice you've already gotten.

You might want to try staying at Santee Lakes in
SD.

We just left Santee Lakes Campground in Santee, CA. Nice place to stay, easy access to all of the freeways. While we were there we used the trolley to get downtown San Diego and around the area. $5.00 a day each for unlimited use that day, anywhere on their system.

If you are towing, just remember that the speed limit in California, for any truck and vehicle towing, is 55 MPH. They do enforce it, gotta get that revenue whereever they can.

Thanks again for the replies. We will be staying in Santee Lakes. Scouted it out 2 yrs ago when visiting without MH. Any recommendations for stops along the way. Looking for safe, easy, and free if possible.
