If you are planning a trip to Mt. Rushmore this summer avoid Hwy 16 between Newcastle WY and Custer SD. Most of the 30 mile stretch of road is under construction and 9 miles of road thru the national park is dirt.
Yesterday I missed the turn off onto Hwy 18 and just followed the GPS up to Hwy 16 to go over to Custer SD. Big mistake!
There are two bridges under construction with stop lights to control one way traffic. narrow roads with lots of loose rocks to kick up and hit your RV or your toad. Then after a short stretch of paved good road you run into 9 miles of NO ROAD
. It was a Saturday so there was no work being done on the road, I can only imagine the traffic delays during the week. I kept my speed down to 10 mph or less and was still bounced around so bad that doors opened and stuff fell out.
I got thru with my 40 ft RV and toad but I don't recommend anyone with a Class A or large anything trying this road. No sign saying when they will be done but from the amount of construction I don't think they will be done until sometime in 2015.
