Hello...I am heading north to Knoxville and stopping at the lake in Murphy NC. I am not familiar with the land up there and need some suggestions.

AAA says from Murhpy NC, take 129S to 294N to 68N to get to 75N.
This passes through Coker Creek and Tellico Plains.

I am driving a 30' A with a 18' enclosed trailer and just looking for feedback about those roads crossing up and over the big hills. From those of you that may have gone this way before, is there anything to be concerned about on this route?

Thanks for you help.

Hi GW,
I have not traveled the area you are interested in. However, the route mentioned in your post is not the route I would choose. My Rand McNally says 294 and 68 are not federal highways. The route is also labeled as a scenic route.

Consider Rt 129 North all the way to Knoxville. Route 129 is a Federal highway. It should have been built and currently maintained to federal standards.

Surely you are jesting about 129 to Knoxville. This route is The Tail of the Dragon and is as crooked as a black snake. I get tired and carsick in my automobile headed that way.

look at this and then make up your mind

Motorcycles out the gazoo and none of them going slow!

I am sorry to say, but there are no real good choices unless you drive all the way to I-40 and drive over the gorge into Tennessee and get to Knoxville from the east. Much to far out of the way. Do not take US 129, it is long, winding and dangerous. You could consider US 64/74 into Cleveland, Tn. I took it in a car several years ago and the NC side was good, but the Tn side was 2 lane, winding with steep grades and the Ocoee River is on one side and trees on the other. It is a much shorter trip than US 129 would be. With a motorhome and a trailer it is rough on the brakes. Supplemental braking is a must.

I currently live in Franklin, NC but used to live just West of Chattanooga near Kimball. I made the 200 mile trip from one place to the other twice a month (or more) for several years. I have been on all the roads mentioned above as I grew up in the area.

This is a better route than running over to I40...

From Murphy, take US19/129 South to Blairsville, GA. Take US76 West thru Blue Ridge/Ellijay (reduce speed - cross bridge - turn right at the first light as you hit town then immediate left to stay on US76)/Chatsworth (that's the worst part as you'll be driving thru town)/Dalton (either stay straight or turn right onto the By-Pass) this will either put you onto I75 at Exit 333 (Cracker Barrel is there) or Exit 336/Rocky Face via the By-Pass (I usually took the By-Pass). Take I75 North to I24 (INSIDE LEFT LANE!!! Dual Lanes drop to 1 - Left - Lane to merge onto I24!! DO NOT GO TO THE REST STOP AT THE GA/TN STATE LINE!!!) immediately after Exit 1 in East Ridge/Chattanooga to Knoxville. Wildwood GA (Exit 174) is a good spot for gas. Right after Wildwood, I59 turns off on the right side of the Interstate... caution, drivers wait until the last minute and then cross 3 lanes to go to AL... usually without looking at the traffic around them. This route will put you having to pull Monteagle Mountain (shortly after Exit 152 Kimball/S. Pittsburg). Just take it easy going up the mountain (it's a long haul) and you will be okay. The Wal-Mart at Kimball will allow overnight parking if you need it... they also have a Cracker Barrel there now so you will see signs for it. Not long after Kimball you will start up Monteagle. BTW, this route across the north edge of GA will give you cellphone coverage about 95% of the way.

Lorna, I was following your route until I got onto 75. I am heading to Knoxville, not Nashville. So once I get to 75N, I would be fine right?

Coasti,

64/74 looks like a shorter route back to 75N, than what Lorna suggested. Your route encouraged supplemental breaking. Of course I have breaks on my trailer. What other breaking would you be thinking about? Is that two lane with a drop off better to avoid, by heading further south as Lorna suggested?

Doc,

I am very familiar with the Tail on 129. You are exactly correct. That is why I thought it best to ask before heading up there. Of course that route through Robbinsville is not on my agenda. The only part of 129 I will be on is south of Murphy.

Thanks for the post and the link.

One more question. I am coming up from Atlanta to Murphy. I see that 575 turns into 515, which becomes a two lane road that runs through and is eventually labeled the Appalachian Hwy. The direct route is via a GA-60 Spur N to 74/64 and into Murphy. The alternative is to stay on 515 to Blairsville, then N on 129 to 74/64 N into Murphy.

Any thoughts on taking 515 or the spur? Alternatively I could route up 75 to Cleveland TN before heading E to Murphy.

My main concern is to avoid some of the tiny back roads with hairpin turns, steep grades ands low hanging trees. I don't mind enjoyable two lane roadways with a view. But I also want to avoid 35mph stretches as well.

Thanks for your insight.

I am not familiar with that route. However, it might be simpler to get off I-75 Macon or Forsyth and come up through Athens, getting on US 129 either in Milledgeville or Athens. US129 will take you up to Blairsville with the biggest traffic problem being Gainesville. This is an excellent road, even if it does get a little steep on Blood Mountain near Vogel State Park.

Atlanta just seems a little out of the way heading to Blairsville area

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that you did not have trailer brakes. Must of been thinking about using supplemental braking when towing a car.

Lorna is correct with the suggested route except that while driving north on I-75 from Dalton, Ga and just as you enter Tennessee keep to the right and stay on I-75. It will take you all the way to Knoxville.

Bob...so you are saying that 64/74 is not a as good as Lorna's route down through Blue Ridge to Dalton? Would you say 64/74 greater than a 6% grade?

Doc---I am glad you said that about 129 from Athens. I am going to be coming through Union Point, south of Athens and was initially looking at that route to Blairsville. If it is really a nice road, that might be my path.

Thanks.
