Hi,
I am leaving Ct and heading to Myrtle Beach next week and then on to Florida. The directions from FMCA and Triple A show leaving Myrtle beach taking 17 down south till merge with 95 again. Anyone know this route and is it M/H friendly? I was more inclined to head back out 501 that way to pick up the 95 connection.

I am hoping that 17 is not like the Boston Post Rd in Ct.

Thanks for any responses.

Hi Jim;

We're currently in Myrtle Beach and will be leaving Nov. 29th. I plan to drive down 17 through Charleston until I hit I-95. Last year I drove 17 and then alt17 over to I-95. Alt17 is very rural and not much to see on that route. Plus alt 17 was narrow without a berm in many areas. The was a brand new Walmart at Moncks Corners and we stayed there for the night.

I do plan to hit Charleston either before or after rush hour.

Using 17 rather than 501 will save you 40 miles plus 17 is a scenic drive.

Thanks Tom,
So if I understand your response correctly you are suggesting staying on 17 and not taking alt 17 correct??

Jim

That is what I'm doing in 3 weeks.

Alt 17 is OK with little traffic. I would us it again but I like to drive different routes for a change of scenery.

Charleston is a large city but 17 is all limited access at Charleston. I'll try and hit Charleston during non-rush hours. I do know there is a large new cable stay bridge over the Coopers River entering Charleston.

If you're going down after Nov 29th email me and I'll be able to tell you have the route is.

17 is a great ride. Little traffic and certainly not as fast as I-95. Road is in pretty good shape conpared to 95. We try to travel that direction every trip to MB.

I travel this route when going to or coming from MB. I just traveled RT 17 in June and July of this year. I agree with what has been previously said. I see little difference in RT 17 and RT ALT 17. The wife prefers RT 17 so guess which route we take. There is more to see (read more small towns with lower speed limits) and the variety makes to route seem to pass by quickly. All too soon you will return to the dreaded I95.

Thanks Jim;

We'll be headed down 17 on Wed and you've taken any uncertainties out of my decision.

Took 17 south from Myrtle Beach through Charleston to I-95 last week.

When I was hooking up my car a fellow with a 2007 42' Allegro Bus told me when I get to Charleston to take I-526 around Charleston rather than 17 through town. He said 17 through town had to many curves for a large coach.

I "chickened out" and took I-526 around and got back on 17 at the southside of Charleston.
