Natchez Trace
Has anyone driven this recently. We will be taking it in two weeks with a 40 foot and toad.
Can the campgrounds handle big rigs?
Thanks

As an RV'r that also rides motorcycles, please pull over every so often and let traffic pass you.

Two years ago in a 42' motorhome with a toad. No problems (well, there was a water leak, completely not associated with the Natchez Trace).
It's not fast. Pretty drive. Many beautiful places along the way.
Take care,
Stu

I understand there is a length restriction. Do they hold a MH to it. It is 55 feet with TOAD. With a 43' MH pulling a TOAD I'd have to have a "Smart" car and that will never happen.

Wayne M, that is correct. RV info https://www.nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/rvs.htm
I have found that the ups.gov site has good info for RV's. Shenandoah NF & Skyline Drive in VA, Blue Ridge Parkway in VA and NC. (low clearance tunnels!)
momdoc, there are not any campgrounds directly accessible from the Trace, you would have to exit the trace to any nearby. Also, there are no gas stations along the Trace (except maybe one in Miss), so again, you have to get off the trace to fuel up. I haven't driven the full length, yet, and not in our MH, but since the northern end around Milepost 430 is in south west Nashville, we often drive it in the Fall down to the Alabama border to see the fall color.

Overhanging trees
For a larger RV, the Southern portion of the Trace, from Natchez to Tupelo, has lots of overhanging trees. In many cases they can be avoided by changing to the oncoming lane, but oncoming cars may prevent that. The Southern portion isn't a good route for a 12'8" height because of the low branches. Length doesn't seem to be a problem.
The Natchez from Tupelo Northward is a good route, with just a few low branches. The trees seem to be farther from the roadside.

Have driven it 2x. Not likely to see many oncoming cars. I called the NP office about our length at 61 feet, and was told no problem. Stayed at a private park in Tupelo the only time we overnited. There are many other options along the way.

I came down the Trace last November and stayed at all 3 of the Trace NPS campgrounds with my 35' MH. Like most National Park campgrounds, they weren't designed for large RV's. I always found a site I could get into.
Being late November the campgrounds were pretty empty for me. I imagine they will be more crowded now in the summer, thus giving you fewer choices of sites and increasing the odds that all the big rig capable sites will be taken.
