Natchez Trace (55 feet)

Happened to see a post on FB that mentioned there is a 55' limit on the Trace. Checked the website and it seems that is accurate so my Feb plans just got trashed unless there is some exception and I don't see any. We are a 40' MH towing a Saturn which is 15'. But, the tow bar probably adds another 2-3 feet.

I don’t think it’s inforced on the Trace. But you may have trouble in the campgrounds. We did the Trace a few years ago with a different RV but we were still 49’.

There was no point on the route where anyone checked our rig. You just drive. We camped one night in the Meriweather Lewis CG.

It was a nice drive, no trucks, no billboards, no highway junk.

We got on at Nashville (at the Loveless Cafe) and got off at Jackson, MS. The road deteriorated in MS. There is a 55-mph speed limit the whole way.

If in doubt, unhook the tow car, and have your co pilot drive it for that portion of the road. Im not familiar with that road, but we have done many others that had limits. Its usually only in one spot or a few normally.

The Trace is 444 miles long and its all Federal highway and their rules. So that isn't option because we want to see it together and talk about what we see.

We've driven it with our 40' towing a Jeep. They are not going to measure you!

we did it in a 40 foot fiver being pulled by a crew cab long bed ford dually......some pull outs were tight, but with careful attention you can get through most of it easily enough. there a few LOW bridges right off the trace if you venture out.

I emailed the Trace folks and they answered back that the max length is 55 feet over all. We were near the Trace and visited one of the visitor centers and asked the questions of length. We were told that the rule was written many years ago when RVs were smaller. The campgrounds and some pull offs will be a problem for you. But they said they do not check RVs for length and if you obey the strictly enforced speed limit and do not do anything stupid or unlawful, they would not bother you.

We are a bit over 58 feet and did complete about 100 miles on the Trace with no issues. It is beautiful, but can get a bit boring on the drive.

If you are operating commercial, stay off the Trace. We saw one tractor trailer pulled over and getting the full treatment.

I live just off the Trace and drive it regularly in a 40 ft MH towing a Jeep. I travel on it often either in an Auto or motorcycle and see MHs towing or big fifth wheels that exceed 55í. As someone said, itís an old law written when everything was smaller and just has never been changed. There are two things that the Rangers on The Trace enforce, speeding and commercial vehicles. You better not exceed 52-53 and you better not have a business name on the door of your pickup other than that, enjoy the trip.

Thanks all! I'll tempt fate and start a life of crime in March. Looking forward to the Trace.
