Does anyone have any travel route recommendations from New Jersey to Cherokee, N.C? It looks like I will be taking 81 South in Tennessee to 40 East into North Carolina.

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Mike, Your route is correct and that is the way I normally go. Since you are going to Cherokee you will follow I-40 East and get off at the Route 74 exit and follow that south to Route 441 (Exit 74) and take that into Cherokee, NC. I don't know where to turn off for Cherokee but I think there are signs.
There is another way instead of I-40 but it is a little complicated.

Another option is to take I-26 from I-81 north of Johnson City, TN down to I-40 at Asheville, NC and then as posted above to Cherokee. That stretch of I-26 over Sam's Gap is very scenic and it's a relatively new highway. The last segment in NC was opened in 2003.

Older maps may still show it as US 23.
