New Jersey to Florida Keys

We will be leaving on Jan.12 for a 2 month stay in the keys, My question is how is the best route on Rt.95 south ? Want to try and avoid the beltway around Wash, and does anyone use the Harbor tunnel ?

I just travelled from MA to Florida. I took I-81 south from PA to avoid all of NJ to DC area. You can then swing east and pick 95 in many places

Went from Portland to Keys. There now. Took 95 thru New York across GW. Debated with myself for a long time and decided to take 95. Hit the GW at noon on a Saturday and had some traffic but not bad. DW wanted to see Williamsburg so we took I think was Rt 31 and crossed Ches. On bridge/tunnel. Pretty neat. Then took 64 to 95. Some tolls but what I saved in diesel more than paid for toll. The bypass is a long way around. Timing going thru NY is everything. We're at the KOA in Sugarloaf. Hope to see you. Merry Xmas. Weather is great. Jack

Have lunch one day at the Hogfish Grill on Stock Island. Sparky's Landing in Marathon has a great 25 cent shrimp happy hour special.

Propane is not permitted in either Baltimore tunnel, you would have to take the beltway around Baltimore.

I suggest I 95 to Rt 896 in Delaware,

Rt 896 becomes Rt 301,

Rt 301 to Annapolis,

Rt 301 across the Potomac to VA,

Rt 301 to Rt 207 at Bowling Green

Rt 207 (watch out for the radar) to I 95 at Carmel Church.

It's a bit longer, but a much nicer ride and I always go this way to avoid Baltimore and D.C.

You need less than under 104#. Went thru with half tank which was about 50#. Also shut off main shut off. When I entered she asked me if main shut was closed. Had no problem. Jack

I went through the tunnel as well and they just asked if my propane was off.

Since you're in southern Jersey heading over to 81 is a bit out of the way so I'd say you're better off just dealing with DC. When I go south as I am tonight, I head west on 78 to 81 south then 66 to 17 on to 95.

And don't pass up the No Name Pub on Big Pine Key! And yes... the Hogs Breath Saloon in Key West

It was Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. I even phone them as well as looking up on line before heading that way. Jack

Exclamation

Am I reading this correct, I can go thru the Baltimore tunnel straight on rt95 and avoid going round the beltway to Townsen.

Is that correct, I'm headed there tomorrow please confirm.

-------------

Oh in answering the OP ? take 95 straight down, hit DC after 9AM you will not hit traffic, then take 295 bypass around Richmond.

You cannot go through the Baltimore tunnels with much propane.

Quote:
The Transport of Hazardous Materials Across our Toll Facilities

Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) govern the transport of hazardous materials across our toll facilities. Under these regulations, vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895). The Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695, the Baltimore Beltway) is a convenient alternative route for crossing Baltimore's Harbor.
