I'm not sure how far from NYC to Niagra but there is a KOA on Grand Island.

One thing we need to know before we can route is do you have a passport and if you do do you want to travel through Canada, or just take the toll roads across the US?

If you go Canadian then you cross over in Detroit , make a right onto the freeway, ramp to I-96, I-94 and Chicago. It has been too many years since I ran across Canada though so I can not recall the path.. You will want to cross on the bridge.

Steve: I have made that trip a few times in the last few years for work. I took tollways to Buffalo and crossed over into Canada then took I think was the 400 from Niagra Falls Canada to Sarnia Ontario Canada and crossed back over into the United States via the Sarnia Ontario - Port Huron MI BlueWater Bridge. You then take I69 W until it turns into I 69 S. Stay on that to I94 then head west on I94 to Chicago. You miss all the traffic and construction in Detroit/Windsor and you will find many RV and state parks to stay in as you travel. and overall, I found that it was quicker.

Use google Maps etc and go NY to Niagra Falls, Niagra Falls to Sarnia Ontario/Port Huron MI (Blue Water Bridge to US). Then google from Port Huron MI to Chicago IL.

Note you will need passport and one other ID to cross Canada/US border and you need to make sure you have no firearms etc. You can check the web sites for Blue Water Bridge/Buffalo-Niagra bridge.

Good luck it is a long drive with some construction in Niagra Falls, but it is a good easy trip.

Thanks for the quick replies. Because of the time of year a lot of camp grounds are not open. I'll punch the route into Google maps and go from there. Passport ok except that they are Australian - hopefully not a problem - Visa maybe I'll do some research
Ive been pushing to get this sorted before xmas as I was told by one campground near New York that I'd ned to book early for April.

2-3 years ago I went the other way, Port Huron, MI, crossed into Sarnia, drove accross Onterio, then to the falls on the Canadian side. That was in June and I found the roads to be very good, and Ontario seemed to be cleaner than many places in the US. If you're going in April I'd plan on inclement weather and then hope you don't get it. Good luck.

If you need a great campground to stay at in the Niagara Falls, I will recommend the KOA lundy's Lane in Ontario. The roads to Sarnia Ontario to cross over to Michigan and then I 69 down to I 94 and then to Chicago.
