We are heading out to Disney from NJ this Thursday around 7pm. Looking at the atlas it looks like Rt. 301 is a good alternate to 95 and will bring me around Washington and I will jump back onto 95 South just above Richmond Virginia.

Does anyone have any input on Rt. 301 as an alternate route to 95?

Thanks for your assistance.

Went thru last week coming back from FL. 301 is a popular alternative to 95 and the DC-Balt traffic. Pleasant drive, have to deal with traffic lights thru many of the towns.

Not sure what part of NJ you're leaving from, but if you can go thru Balt-DC after the traffic you shouldn't have a problem.

Bob,

Thanks for the info. I live in Northern New Jersey (Bergen County). Given the fact that I am leaving at 7pm I won't hit the Washington area until 11:30pm so I would imagine the traffic won't be bad at that time.

When we head back from Florida I was thinking about swinging throught the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia. Would you have a suggested route?

Thanks,

Mike R.

Mike,

It has been a while since I went that way so I'm not sure what the conditions (construction) are. The 2 ways I've gone are (1) 95 to 26 in SC to 77 to 81 to 78 or 80 (2) 95 to 64 in Richmond to 81 to 78 or 80.

If you could let us know what you're driving, others that are more familiar with the area will be able to suggest the best routes to take.

Whichever route you take, have a safe and fun trip and may you find the best fuel rates.

I recommend 301 as the way to go...

How long does the 301 detour take? Is the route two lane? It also looks like there are two toll bridges.

I think from Wilmington area to Richmond area is around 200 mi and 4 hr depending on traffic.
There are 2 bridges to cross but only 1 toll. Portions are 4 lane and 2 lane as well as traffic lights in the towns.

If you are coming back from the south in late April or early May, I-81 through the Shenandoah valley is a beautiful ride at this time of year!

I-95, I-26, I-77, I-81 is the way to go. It is a pull going over the Blue Ridge on I-81 but the dogwoods and redbud trees in the Valley are quite a sight.

Mike:

I am originally from Bergenfield, and have made the trips from FL through NJ a few times. Another route back is to go up 95 to Norfork, VA and take the Chessapeake Bay bridge over and pick up 13, and pick up the Ferry in Delaware, accross to Cape May, NJ. If the weather is good, this can be a nice trip. If you do, Call ahead and make Resevations for the Ferry, the day and time you will be there. Two years ago, I was loaded first and had a great view, sitting in the front of the ferry. The water was perfectly calm that dayand the trip was great.

Living 8 miles from Route 301 here in Va., I can tell you that is the way to go to get around DC. Best bet is to take 301 from the Nice bridge to Bowling Green Va. There you stay on the 4 lane (route 207) to I-95 at Carmel Church. You also have a Flying J at Carmel Church to full up at.
