NOLA

We are planning a trip from Louisville, KY to NOLA in mid-June. The plan currently is to travel south to Foley, AL, then do a few short side trips to Mobile, Pascagoula and Biloxi before arriving in NOLA. Can anyone tell me what kind of road 90 is versus I-10? I'd rather travel the back roads to NOLA than the interstate, but wonder how that would be in a 40 foot MH towing a Jeep?

Its been many years since I have traveled that road, but I would think it would be fine.

I haven't been on 90but I-10 is horrible. Lost a hubcap on I-10 when we came through Louisiana about 2 weeks ago. So bumpy. Horrible transitions on and off bridges. We have a 43 ft. 5th wheel. Tx roads on 1-10 much better

You would be wise to take the more "cultural" route along US Hwy 90 when you leave Mississippi. I'd encourage you to stay away from I-10..especially in early summer months when people are going to and from the Gulf Coast. Lots of traffic and when you combine this with construction delays, it becomes nerve wracking.

There is to see in the "shady sub-tropical outpost" we call New Orleans, and if you need any "insider" tips on what to see and more importantly where to eat, let me know and I'll be glad to help.

If a highway/road is highlighted in yellow or orange in your Rand McNally motor carriers road atlas it is approved for travel by big-rigs.
Any restrictions to height or weight are listed in the front section by state.

Recently traveled I10 and Hwy 90 through parts of MS and AL. Both were mostly good roads. Lots of traffic lights on 90 through towns and can be congested around Biloxi/Gulfport. I10 is a busy road but the MS/Al portion is a pretty good road.

We stayed in Gautier, MS at Shepard State Park. Very reasonable rates ($13 for seniors) with water, 30/50amp but no sewer, just a dump station. Fairly convenient for Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, Biloxi and Gulfport.
You may not like the city water... It's better than it used to be, but it still has flavor. We were there for about two months and never did get used to it.

Compared to So Cal's freeways, we found 10 to be just fine. We only drove our dinghy on 90, but did a lot of it. One thing I would suggest is to access 90 via a major road. We found a lot of places, especially around Biloxi & Gulfport, where I would have been concerned about bottoming out in our 37' Class A. The railroad crossings are much higher than the surrounding area, resulting in quite a crest.

NOLA's I-10 is better than some but not as bad as others... 90 is lots of stop lights but more flavor, for sure!

Well, that's what I'm looking for. I just want to get off the slab as much as possible. Thanks for the info.

As an update, 90 was great and a nice drive. I'd do it again.
