Over the years I have done this (fun?) drive and usually take the 295-N/95-N out of Richmond to Fredericksburg, then the Rt. 17 to Winchester, Va. and the 81-N > 84-E > 87-N. But looking at the map that is a long way out of the way, so I returned to my old Navy days when I would go home in Ct. for the weekend and I tried, on a Sunday afternoon, the 95-N to the Jersey Turnpike, the 287 > 87, and guess what? It works out to be shorter in mileage, but just about equal in time due to traffic, and I have not mentioned tolls. Also, I used to go that route ('56-'63) and it would take me ten to eleven hours to Ct., and with the Interstates and added traffic, it takes about the same time.
